THE PICNIC TABLE
CLEMSON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
The Picnic Table was the inspiration for the Clemson Architecture Community Design+Build studio's project for the spring 2018 semester. The goal of the project was to activate the space beneath the I-26 underpass in Charleston, SC as a pedestrian and bike transportation corridor. The picnic table quickly became the perfect metaphor for the process of community work. The need for open and even discussion between community members, leaders, artists, designers, makers, and government was immediately apparent in this project.
The picnic table is the humble setting where this can all take place. The follies that were inspired by the picnic table are designed in a way that they can, at the completion of their lives as follies, be rebuilt and reused as tables. In this way, they continue to serve the community as a lasting history of the process.
