COMMUNITY TABLE

cameron mcrae

This architectural folly-table explores the importance of recognition in the world of community projects through the act of stepping.

When two people step toward each other to take a place at the table, they are recognizing the value that each has to offer, and more importantly the disorder that results from their leaving.  When unoccupied, the table is in a state of collapse with the tabletop broken into four unusable quadrants. The introduction of a weight on the bench supports the tabletop that is diagonally aligned with it and allows it to be properly used as a table surface.  With all four foot-benches occupied, the table becomes a space for discussion and community where each person’s presence serves to facilitate the usefulness of the table. When one of the occupants steps away from the table, the surface diagonally aligned with their bench collapses inward and no longer functions as a useful table surface.

In this manner, the act of stepping to the table reflects the importance of two or more people coming together in the interest of each other's company and the knowledge that they and their ideas are of equal worth and consideration. The action of stepping away without communicating your intent to the table could result in disaster for the rest of the community at the table.
